Toilet Lid Cover Pillows   -   2007.9.9

When most people think of pillows, they don't think of the bathroom and its decor, particularly toilet decor! Pillows are soft and comfy, bathrooms and toilets are cold and hard. What could they possibly have in common? Well, you're probably not going to make pillows to use in the bathroom, but how about taking something from the bathroom to make pillows? Actually, don't remove anything from the bathroom, just purchase a couple of toilet lid covers and you're well on your way to creating a fabulous and unique pillow!

Because of the shape of toilet lid covers, they can quickly be turned into throw pillows for the living room or den. And, if you have a bathroom within a bedroom, you can tie together the decor between the rooms, by making toilet lid cover pillows for your bed.

Turn the toilet lid covers inside-out. Align the tags, or mark another spot on each pillow to guide you, then begin sewing around the perimeter of the two lid covers. Since toilet lid covers have elastic around the edges, you'll just stitch directly onto the elastic, all the way around. A close zig-zag stitch is best, to make sure you catch the elastic on each side.

So, as you're stitching, the elastic from one lid cover will be laying beside the elastic on the other lid cover. Although you can overlap the elastic pieces, and stitch them that way, the pillow will have a completely different look when finished.

After sewing almost all the way around the pillow, stop short, and leave an opening to turn the pillow right-side-out, and to stuff it. Stuff it with pillow stuffing, foam chips - whatever you have, then hand stitch or sew the opening shut.

The pillow will have the appearance of an overstuffed pillow with a band around it. Add to the look of the "band" by actually making a band to go around the pillow. The band can be a simple piece of fabric, hemmed on the edges, and wrapped around the elastic part of the pillow.

The pillow will look even better with a button in the center. You'll find long needles, meant to help attach buttons through thick items, at most stores that well fabrics. Use ordinary, but large, buttons purchased from a notions shop, or have an upholsterer make the buttons for you. It doesn't cost much to have the buttons made; just ask the upholsterer to choose a piece of leftover fabric and make a couple of buttons.

You can further enhance the pillow by adding a bow at the top, where the band ends meet. Use nice ribbon to make the band and bow, or just purchase a pre-made bow to attach to the pillow. Make sets of pillows and toss them on the furniture, on the floor by a fireplace, or even in a child's room.

After making the set of toilet lid covers, consider making a second set, consisting of the toilet lid covers without the elastic. Cut the elastic off the pillows then sew the two pieces together. These pillows will be coordinating, but will be slightly smaller, and have a different appearance.

Of course, you'll want to choose the softest toilet lid covers to make pillows, so shop around for a good deal on quality products. The type of lid cover will make all the difference in the comfort of the pillow.

The pillows make great gifts for anyone, and recipients will be thrilled with the uniqueness of the present. Even if you're a beginner, when it comes to sewing, you'll easily be able to make these gifts - for a friend or yourself!
