Baby Block Book Shelves   -   2007.9.10

You can use simple wood baby block to customize and existing set of book shelves and turn them into a fun and whimsical piece of nursery furniture. This simple baby block book shelf can be made form used book shelves, new book shelves, or hand build book shelves! You Decide!

To Make These Baby Block Book Shelves You Will Need:

1 Pre made wood shelves
Paint
Primer
Paint brush
Sand Paper
Wood baby blocks (lots in the small size)
Power drill
Screws
Wood glue

So, the first step is to address your existing book shelves. White is the perfect color for baby block book shelves, but you can paint yours out in any color you wish.

Sand the shelves first and then prime. Now, paint on any color you wish. If you want to match yoru baby blocks, try using a vintage looking milk paint. Milk paint can double as a primer and has a nice matte finish, just like many vintage ebay blocks.

If your baby blocks are new and shiny, then go for a semi gloss indoor paint.

Now, once all the paint has dried you are ready to start customizing the bookshelves with your baby blocks.

Lay the books shelves on flat on their back. This will allow easy access to install your baby blocks and play around with the design.

Now, start by lignin the front t of each shelf with the wood baby blocks. I recommend lignin the top of the vintage wood baby block up with the top of the shelf so that they are perfectly level.

You can predrill holes in the back of the block and in the shelf and use a double sided screw to attach them. For a less permanent option you can always use hot glue. This will allow you to pop the wood block off and repurpose the book shelves later in life. That is not my favorite option though.

My favorite option is to line the fronts of each shelf with a strip of self adhering Velcro. On the back of each baby block place the other piece of Velcro. This will allow little kids to pull the baby blocks off, play with them, and then put them back on!

This final option is great for teaching kids how to spell!

You can also line the outer frame of the shelves with baby blocks if you want.

Now, one tip. I always recommend screwing any bookcases in a child's bedroom into a stud in the wall if the shelf is tall. You do not want yoru custom baby block shelves falling forward.

Enjoy!
