Fall Home Decorating Nutty Wreath   -   2007.9.10

Fall weather brings the holidays. The holidays bring thoughts of food. Some of the most popular snacks for the holidays are mixed nuts. There are bags of mixed nuts that you can buy still in the shell and you can use these to make the wreath. When you are looking to make a unique wreath for Fall, consider putting this one together for displaying in your dining room, either hanging up or on a stand. This wreath is for decorative purposes only and is not intended for Human Consumption!

How To Make a Nutty Wreath For Fall-- What You Will Need

Straw Wreath Form (In whatever size you want.)

One or More Bags of Mixed, In-the-Shell, Nuts (If it proves cheaper, you can buy the nuts by the pound instead. Just make sure to have a good mix to work with.)

Decorative Bow

Wire (For hanging your wreath.)

Wreath Stand (If you would rather stand it up to display it.)

Can of Spray-On Clear Coat Sealer

Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

Nutty Wreath For Fall-- Getting Started

Begin by covering your work surface with newspaper or a drop cloth. Plug in your glue gun and start it heating up. Have all of your materials within easy reach. Try and separate the nuts so that you can pick out one of each kind at a time. This will make the wreath go a lot quicker when it comes time to glue them on.

Nutty Wreath For Fall--Gluing on the Mixed Nuts

Starting at the top of the wreath, work down one side and up the other. You will be handling the nuts as you put the hot glue on them, so you might want to set you a bowl of cool water next to your workspace for dipping your fingers should you get the hot glue on you.

Begin gluing the nuts down onto the straw wreath, covering as much area as possible. Once you have the bottom layer on, you can add some smaller nuts on top of these to give it more depth. Remember, nutshells come in all different sizes, shapes, and colors. Take advantage of that when putting your wreath together.

Nutty Wreath For Fall--Spraying on the Clear Coat

Once the mixed nuts are all glued down, give them a little while to set before you do this step. Take the wreath outside, or in a well-ventilated area and spray it with the clear coat. Allow the first coat to dry and then add on a second coat. If you use a glossy-finish clear coat, the end result will be astonishing.

Nutty Wreath For Fall--Adding the Bow

When you have left the clear coat to dry for the recommended time, it's time to add the bow. Since the entire surface of the straw wreath is covered with mixed nuts, the bow's placement will be strictly up to you. You can glue the bow on, or use floral wire to tie it onto the wreath. Try it out in different spots until you find the right one. See how it would look at the top center, top off-center, bottom, bottom off-center, or on one side.

After you have the bow attached, you can make the hanger for your wreath or set up your wreath stand to display it. It can be a bit heavy, so do consider standing it up. If you add some Fall candles on either side, it can make a lovely showpiece for your dining room during the Fall season.
